{"id":3161,"date":"2025-10-29T15:30:11","date_gmt":"2025-10-29T15:30:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/menamagazine.com\/?p=3161"},"modified":"2025-10-29T15:30:11","modified_gmt":"2025-10-29T15:30:11","slug":"saudi-arabia-backed-lucid-and-nvidia-team-up-to-launch-self-driving-evs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/themena.com\/index.php\/2025\/10\/29\/saudi-arabia-backed-lucid-and-nvidia-team-up-to-launch-self-driving-evs\/","title":{"rendered":"Saudi Arabia-backed Lucid and Nvidia team up to launch self-driving EVs"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p id=\"el-0-G4Q6EVPYTRG65KN2OYRRUZMY6Y\">Saudi Arabia-backed electric vehicle maker\u00a0Lucid Group\u00a0is to launch models with near-full autonomy in partnership with chip leader\u00a0Nvidia, accelerating its self-driving programme and bidding to challenge market leader\u00a0Tesla.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"el-1-REPRLK4Q6FA7RJ3TJEHNSMMCTQ\">Lucid is to use Nvidia&#8217;s Drive AV system, which comes with level 4 autonomous driving capabilities, in its mid-sized vehicles, the California car maker said during the\u00a0Future Investment Initiative\u00a0conference in Riyadh on Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"el-3-YWYJVQZGIBCHZNXJEVRTGN7MXI\">Level 4 refers to the second-highest of the six levels of autonomy, from 0 to 5, in which vehicles do not require\u00a0human intervention under most circumstances. Level 5, the highest, requires no human attention, and vehicles with this status may not even have steering wheels or pedals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"el-4-WFP4DCAE4JBGJAFUAIT3O3DPKM\">Lucid, in which Saudi Arabia&#8217;s Public Investment Fund has a majority stake, did not provide a timetable for the launch of level-4 EVs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"el-5-U4DWLSN4LNAS3AEPIQFLVCXNTY\">In July, Lucid teamed up with ride-hailing company\u00a0Uber Technology\u00a0and US robotics company Nuro to launch a\u00a0global robotaxi programme, with Uber planning to use at least 20,000 Lucid vehicles equipped with the level-4 Nuro Driver platform across six years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"el-7-R6F6BLGKGFGCRCKD4TCKMUH4KA\">&#8220;We\u2019re taking the next step by combining cutting-edge artificial intelligence with Lucid\u2019s engineering excellence to deliver the smartest and safest autonomous vehicles on the road,&#8221; Marc Winterhoff, interim chief executive of Lucid, said on Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"el-8-JCCX2CXACFH2ZHJZLCLLNEFZWM\">Driverless, or autonomous, vehicles are seen as the future of transport, and major companies are racing to advance the technology, trying to perfect their platforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" src=\"https:\/\/themena.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/https3A2F2Fcdn.jwplayer.com2Fv22Fmedia2F2mrq0Y932Fposter.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3163\" style=\"width:834px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/themena.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/https3A2F2Fcdn.jwplayer.com2Fv22Fmedia2F2mrq0Y932Fposter.jpg 400w, https:\/\/themena.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/https3A2F2Fcdn.jwplayer.com2Fv22Fmedia2F2mrq0Y932Fposter-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Could Gulf states be the ideal location for self-driving vehicles?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"el-10-74IGWCJGD5G3ZIKXOGUCYBMUU4\">These vehicles, which have attracted billions in investment, are meant to support the sustainable transport agenda countries for which most countries are aiming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"el-11-Z4ESUSEBP5H63K2ME27X6WOM74\">And despite the progress made, safety concerns still linger \u2013 for instance, flaws in software found in cars made by Elon Musk&#8217;s Tesla have forced recalls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"el-12-FQWFCG4U3FAUPKBHPXQ5TM3NTY\">But with enhanced AI, powered by new-generation hardware and software, &#8220;vehicles evolve into software-defined supercomputers on wheels&#8221;, said Jensen Huang, chief executive of California-based Nvidia. &#8220;A new opportunity emerges \u2013 to reimagine mobility with intelligence at every turn,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"el-13-IGXD2ISRUZHLFGNNSVVY2EBXNM\">Separately, Nvidia said Lucid will be adopting the former&#8217;s Omniverse platform to build digital twins of its factories that will allow real-time factory planning and optimisation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"el-14-XYE6UJVAZRB6ZBHFL3Z3LGVGGY\">Omniverse is a computing platform that lets users develop 3D workflows and applications using the Universal Scene Description programme \u2013 a high-performance and extensible software platform \u2013 in a faster way, boosted by AI and using little to no code.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"el-15-AFRT4RZ67RHWVGCRCZ2S7EVWWU\">A digital twin, meanwhile, is a virtual representation of an object or system and is one of the core components of the Metaverse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"el-16-4MKAEGRXLBDTNHKL3MWPVWADYI\">Lucid will use Omniverse to train AI-driven robotics systems as well, Nvidia said at its GTC conference in Washington.
