{"id":4080,"date":"2026-05-13T12:07:03","date_gmt":"2026-05-13T12:07:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/menamagazine.com\/?p=4080"},"modified":"2026-05-13T12:07:03","modified_gmt":"2026-05-13T12:07:03","slug":"thousands-of-waymos-recalled-after-robotaxi-swept-into-a-creek","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/themena.com\/index.php\/2026\/05\/13\/thousands-of-waymos-recalled-after-robotaxi-swept-into-a-creek\/","title":{"rendered":"Thousands of Waymos recalled after robotaxi swept into a creek"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Waymo is recalling thousands of its self-driving cars in the US over a software issue that could allow vehicles to drive into flooded roads.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/static.nhtsa.gov\/odi\/rcl\/2026\/RCAK-26E026-9973.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a letter posted on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA),&nbsp;external<\/a>&nbsp;website on Tuesday, the voluntary recall affects nearly 3,800 robotaxis that use the company&#8217;s fifth and sixth-generation automated driving systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It follows an incident on 20 April in San Antonio, Texas, where an empty Waymo vehicle entered a flooded road and was swept into a creek.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The company, which\u00a0hopes to be operating a robotaxi service in London by September, said it was working on &#8220;additional software safeguards&#8221;, according to CNBC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The BBC has contacted Waymo, which is owned by Google&#8217;s parent company Alphabet, for comment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Waymo&#8217;s San Antonio service also remains temporarily suspended following the incident, though the company said it will resume public rides after the necessary software fix had been rolled out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the NHTSA letter, temporary updates limiting where affected vehicles can drive during extreme weather have already been applied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Waymo says it&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Waymo\/status\/2037213042966983000?s=20\">now provides more than 500,000 trips per week,&nbsp;external<\/a>&nbsp;across multiple US cities including San Francisco, Austin and Miami.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jack Stilgoe, professor of science and technology policy at University College London, told the BBC that all self-driving car systems had limits on when and where they could operate safely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We often see these limits only when something goes wrong,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/themena.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/c8edfe80-4eba-11f1-ab8c-f3e46050b8be.jpg\" alt=\"An overhead view of a fleet of white Waymo vehicles \" class=\"wp-image-4082\" srcset=\"https:\/\/themena.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/c8edfe80-4eba-11f1-ab8c-f3e46050b8be.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/themena.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/c8edfe80-4eba-11f1-ab8c-f3e46050b8be-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/themena.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/c8edfe80-4eba-11f1-ab8c-f3e46050b8be-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Waymo says it now provides more than 500,000 trips per week across multiple US cities<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>As more autonomous vehicles are deployed, Prof Stilgoe said, more such problems are likely to emerge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;That isn&#8217;t to say the technology won&#8217;t be hugely beneficial,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;But policymakers would prefer to know about these things in advance rather than discovering them in hindsight.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the past year several incidents with different driverless car firms have raised concerns over robotaxi safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In December 2025, a large power outage in San Francisco led Waymo taxis to\u00a0stop working around the city, causing significant disruption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And in April, a\u00a0mass Apollo Go robotaxi outage\u00a0in the Chinese city of Wuhan caused at least a hundred self-driving cars to stop mid-traffic.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Waymo is recalling thousands of its self-driving cars in the US over a software issue that could allow vehicles to drive into flooded roads.
